Professor

Welcome to my personal website. I am a Professor of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and a Full Member of the Hellenic Agricultural Academy, having been working for almost 30 years in research and education. My background couples Forest and Environmental Science (B.Sc.) and Genetics-Breeding (Ph.D., postdoctoral research). My research has been funded principally by the European Commission, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, by the International Energy Agency (Bioenergy Agreement), by the National Council for Industrial and Technological Development of Sweden and by the General Secretariat of Research & Technology, Greece. I currently serve as the Deputy Coordinator of the “Population, Conservation and Ecological Genetics” Unit of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) and as a National Representative in the European Network EUFORGEN where I have been the Leader of the European Genetic Monitoring Working Group. Previously I have served as the Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Hellenic Agricultural Organization – ELGO (National Agricultural Research Foundation of Greece – NAGREF), as a FAO expert in the preparation of the State of the World Forest Genetics Report and in executive positions in national scientific societies. I have published over 160 full research papers, of which more than half in international journals (such as the Journal of Heredity, Theoretical and Applied Genetics, Heredity, PLoS-One, Tree Genetics and Genomes, Hereditas, Plant Molecular Biology Reporter, Plant Genetic Resources, Plant Biosystems, Biochemical Systematics and Ecology, Plant Ecology, Biomass and Bioenergy, etc), and 25 in refereed books and international proceedings.
